The Staff
Sumbandila owes much of its success to the extraordinary group of people involved in both the Full Scholarship and Outreach Programmes. Gill Enslin, Tshilidzi Ravhuhali and Phil and Alma Mapfumo are responsible for the pastoral care of the Full Scholarship children while Jenny Macdonald is responsible for the logistical side.
Five Ridgeway College staff members, namely Leigh Bristow, Carolyn Ingram, Phil Mapfumo, Mike Linden and Bibi Linden as well as Donald Fridjhon are the mainstay of the Saturday and Holiday Schools. In addition, two of the Sumbandila Full Scholarship students, Rosey Mudzanani and Sandra Rabulanyana regularly help with the Outreach Programme. A great many other people give of their time and expertise to assist with or lead activities and help the development of Sumbandila in various ways.
The Trustees
There are four Trustees who have overall responsibility for the policies, programmes, selection procedures and financial operations of the Trust. They participate without remuneration and contribute a depth of experience of local and international education and an intimate knowledge of local society and communities.
Leigh Bristow, founder and director of the Trust, is a Science graduate who has taught in Kenya, the United Kingdom and South Africa. Her own family has a long and intimate historical association with the region and its people. She was the founding Head of Ridgeway College and has recently been appointed as the College’s Director for the second time.
Mike Linden has over forty years’ experience in education as a teacher, school administrator and director of outreach programmes in Swaziland, teacher and project director of a programme for young offenders in the United Kingdom, head of an international school in Tanzania and rector of a College of Education in Limpopo Province. He has a Masters degree in Community Education from the University of East Anglia.
Gideon Ramulifho is a former teacher, school principal and College of Education lecturer who is currently a Senior Education Specialist in the Psychological Services section of the Department of Education, responsible for career guidance and motivational programmes for teachers. His passion for helping people realise their potential was recognised in the 2004 bestowal of the Limpopo Premier’s excellence award for ‘rendering exceptional service to the community.’ He holds an MA from the University of Pretoria.
Nelly Tlakula began her career as a teacher, having trained at Lovedale College. She holds a BA Hons. from UNIN and a MPhil from Stellenbosch University as well as a Postgraduate Diploma in the management of HIV and AIDS, also from Stellenbosch, a certificate in HIV/AIDS care and counseling from UNISA and a FDE in School Counselling and Guidance from RAU. She is currently a Chief Education Specialist and the Manager for Life Orientation and HIV and AIDS Education with the Limpopo Department of Education.
